Just like someone knocking on your door, it's a demand for immediate attention, sometimes with consequences (even if just social pressure) for not responding. The beauty of email is that I can send and receive messages at my convenience. I would love to keep every feature of my smartphone and just strip out the phone part!
As for social networking, I have a somewhat different view. First, I'm really terrible about remembering who I've told what. So left to my own devices, one peer hears it ten times and the other nine never hear it at all. Second, there's a lot of people that I don't have a regular, face-to-face connection with, but I'd still love to hear even the banalities that give character to their lives. Social networking solves both of those issues.
All of that say, I agree that there's nothing quite as nice as meeting someone face-to-face. But in lieu of that, I'll take email and social networking any day of the week. You've articulated these thoughts much more cogently than I've ever been able to. Well done. Get a cheep WiFi or 3g/4g tablet and just use Skype or Google when you need to call someone. Or not as the case may be. I know several people who are very happy to replace their cell phone with a $65-$80 WiFi tablet. Or you can be like me and ignore the whole lot and simply enjoy being able to walk away from everything and not have to explain why I didn't bring my cell along so the people I don't want to talk to can call me up.

He really seemed to be getting of on the great white man thing. Lovecraft doesn't have much but when he does it's pretty bad too. But I hear ya, I have a hard time with it myself. Where I've seen it in Lovecraft and Howard (admittedly I've not read as much as I should) Most racism in it in in the context of the beliefs of a character not some 100% true fact about what was going on. OK I can name one story of Solomon Kane wherein the African society was actually build on the ruins of a white city but I understand that was a hypothesis at the time. Yes it was based in racism but it was something discussed in universities. I pitch it in with the painful hypotheses that Lovecraft inserted in his work from time to time sense disproven. They were set pieces not facts.

 Re: Episode 259
Clearly you guys -- including Chris -- don't know Chris. All the man talks about is fitness and his sex life. Mostly the latter. Talking about Chris without mentioning his penis is like talking about Beethoven without mentioning music.
